Public Service Announcement
After years in the healthcare industry and a lifetime of studying sexuality, I have become aware of the startling fact that all of us are walking petri dishes! We all know about the common Sexually Transmitted Infections and Diseases, but each body has it's own balance of bacteria, parasites, fungi, and other organisms which can be transmitted through intimate contact and might not jive with your system - especially if your immune system isn't strong. Scary, right?
According to the CDC at least 50% of sexually active people will have *genital* HPV in their lifetimes, which can cause cancer of the cervix and larynx. There are MANY strains to this virus, it is difficult to definitively test for, and there is no cure past your own immune system. Essentially all of us carry one or more strains of HPV, with some strains being much worse than others.
Contrary to popular belief, condoms are NOT 100% protection against *any* STI/STD, so always ask questions BEFORE that one night stand or casual hookup. People are fairly honest and at the very least are usually terrible liars when put on the spot; simply asking about recent testing and safe sex practices will reveal a wealth of information. If you're not in this habit already, get into it, otherwise you put yourself and everyone you sleep with at risk.
Further, did you know that if you ask your doctor for STI testing, unless you specifically request certain tests, they typically only test for gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, and hopefully HIV?? Diseases like herpes, trichomoniasis, hepatitis, and HPV are only tested for if you are exhibiting symptoms or having problems. Knowledge is power. Safe sex is more fun & results in MORE SEX in the future!!!!
I know that I am a asymtomatic HSV-1 (ORAL herpes/cold sores) carrier (as does 50%-80% of the population according to the CDC). I get tested every year for HIV, HSV-2 (genital herpes), Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Hepatitis & other general bacterial/fungal infections. My test from January 2012 is negative, as per usual. Note: I specifically ask and pay for the extra tests, asking them to "test for everything" only gets you a fraction of what I've listed.
